My love of photography started as a child. My father took slides and taught me what he knew about photography as I grew up. I had my first “proper” camera for my 16th birthday. Due to family commitments and the price of film, processing etc I made sure that every photo I took came out and didn’t experiment with my photography.

The digital era finally set me free and I have never looked back. I take photos of everything and nothing but composition is very important to me. More and more now my photography is about portraying emotions and adding my own “take” on my work and post processing is becoming more and more important to me. I love to share my skills and help others to reach their potential.

I worked as a psychiatric nurse for years and decided to take early retirement last year in order to really focus on photography and help setup Digital Swaledale with my partner John.

You can see samples of our work on our flickr sites.

Shortlisted in
Landscape Photographer of the Year 2016

“My photographic roots date back to my college days when I studied Photography and Art at Isleworth Polytechnic. Throughout my life and career, I have had the opportunity to take photographs wherever I went. I also taught in one capacity or another ending up as an NVQ A1 Assessor. Today I combine that love of teaching with my love of photography.

My inspiration in my early days were the works of Ansel Adams, Robert Capa, Henry Cartier-Bresson, Don McCullin and David Bailey. My photographic interests include motorsport, architecture and documentary/street photography as well as a love of landscapes.”

Don’t take our word for it, here is what some of our clients have said:

“This was a brilliant day spent with two professional photographers, each with their own styles and techniques, in a beautiful part of the country. I have no hesitation in recommending them.” - Dale C

“Hi John and Sylvia,

I would just like to thank you both for taking me to those wonderful locations in Swaledale last Saturday. During the morning the weather wasn't all that good around Muker but as the day progressed we did have some wonderful bursts of sunshine which helped to make my final pictures. The afternoon up in Gunnerside was probably best for the light and the array of stone barns. This was my second workshop with John and Sylvia and I have to say my photography and confidence has improved dramatically thanks to their guidance and knowledge of the local area. I would urge anyone interested in photography to have a days workshop with John and Sylvia it's relaxed and you work at your own pace.

Thanks again John and Sylvia I'll see you both later in the year.”  - Tony Nicholls
